Global State of Scams 2022: Domain Crawler and Global Anti-Scam Alliance’s Insightful Webinar

On October 25, 2022, DomainCrawler and the Global Anti-Scam Alliance hosted an informative webinar on the current state of online scams. The event featured an in-depth presentation of the Global State of Scams Report 2022 by Prof. Jorij Abraham and Rickard Vikström.

Online Scams: A Rising Threat

Online scams are increasingly pervasive. In many developed countries, 20% to 30% of all reported crimes are related to online fraud, revealing a vast and growing issue. Both individuals and businesses experienced significant losses, totaling nearly $50 billion last year.

The Role of Internet Infrastructure in Facilitating Scams

The current infrastructure provided by hosting companies, SSL certifiers, e-commerce platforms, email providers, registries, and registrars makes it easy for scammers to operate. This infrastructure allows for the quick, cheap, and anonymous setup of fraudulent online activities.

The Need for Unified Action

Addressing online scams requires a united effort from the internet community. The webinar explored the global and local scenarios of online scams, reviewed ongoing efforts, and discussed future strategies.
